A blog for young readers (and YA lovers) from the Providence Athenaeum.

The Providence Athenaeum is a unique library and cultural center in the heart of Providence, Rhode Island. Growing out of the Providence Library Company (fourth library in the United States), the Athenaeum as we know it was formed in 1836. Our handsome building on the corner of Benefit and College was completed in 1838.

We are one of the few surviving membership libraries in the nation. Student memberships are available - visit or call for more information.

This blog is updated by one of our circulation assistants (and YA enthusiast), RJ. Follow us to find out what's new in our Young Adult corner, or just for a daily dose of literary shenanigans.

You can follow the Ath on twitter or facebook. Our catalog and much more information about us can be found at our homepage.

Who Will Own the Night Tournament, Round Thirteen (Final Four!): Buffy vs. Katniss

In celebration of the 2012 summer reading theme across Rhode Island, Own the Night, every Monday our blog will feature two night-dwellers or otherwise creepy characters facing each other down. Vote on one below, or come on in to the Athenaeum to vote in person and see the full bracket of all the contenders!

An epic showdown if there ever was one. This week, Buffy Summers takes on Katniss Everdeen. After easily disposing of their other adversaries, the girl who saved the world (a lot) has come face to face with the girl on fire.

These two have much in common. Both young women are far more deadly than they appear, and both are fiercely protective of the ones they love – both were willing to give up everything to protect their younger sisters. Buffy has the advantage of super-strength, super-speed, and plenty of years experience handling all sorts of weapons, but could the Slayer be struck down by one well-placed arrow from the Mockingjay’s bow?

As heartbreaking as it would be to see these heroines battle it out, we must choose a winner. What do you think? Who’s left standing? Who will own the night?

  1. cplteenzone answered: I say Katniss. No one thought she would win the Hunger Games either!
  2. quarterasian answered: Buffy-she’s got experiance
  3. susanesque answered: Seriously? If it were about strength, wit, or endurance Buffy would win out in seconds flat. BUT she would never kill an innocent -on purpose
  4. sexuallyfrustratedover1d answered: well given buffy has superspeed and accelrated healing I don’t think an arrow will do much.I think they would team up actually.
  5. saminalcrackers answered: Buffy.
  6. fralusans-ana-marein answered: Buffy, no contest.
  7. austenvbronte answered: Buffy. Always.
