A blog for young readers (and YA lovers) from the Providence Athenaeum.

The Providence Athenaeum is a unique library and cultural center in the heart of Providence, Rhode Island. Growing out of the Providence Library Company (fourth library in the United States), the Athenaeum as we know it was formed in 1836. Our handsome building on the corner of Benefit and College was completed in 1838.

We are one of the few surviving membership libraries in the nation. Student memberships are available - visit or call for more information.

This blog is updated by one of our circulation assistants (and YA enthusiast), RJ. Follow us to find out what's new in our Young Adult corner, or just for a daily dose of literary shenanigans.

You can follow the Ath on twitter or facebook. Our catalog and much more information about us can be found at our homepage.

Above are pictures from the Food Vs. Animals Draw-Off. What a great way to end my time at TCAF! Gene Abaum (of everyone’s favorite library webcomic Unshelved) used a list of adjectives from A Game of Thrones to inspire Team Animals (Andy Runton, Corrine Mucha and Jon Chad) and Team Food (Yuko Ota, Vera Brosgol and Lucy Knisley) to achieve cartooning greatness in 60 seconds.

Amongst the many mini-comics, zines, paintings and paperbacks that populated the Toronto Comic Arts Festival, there was this digital exhibit: the TIFF Nexus Comics vs. Games creative jam. Despite the name, there’s no show-down here. Comics artists and indie game developers teamed up to create five fun, beautiful multiplayer games. They’re not for sale, but if you happen to be at the Toronto International Film Festival this September, these unique creations will be showcased there, too!

Thank you to all the creators at TCAF who let me snap their photo. These lovely people wrote and illustrated books available here at the Providence Athenaeum! Titles and call number provided below, so check them out!

  • Jellaby (JF SOO) by Kean Soo
  • Flight Volume 1 (JF KIB) edited by Kazu Kibuishi, featuring work by Kean Soo. I saw Kazu speak on several panels - he was great - but forgot to seek him out for a picture until it was too late!
  • The Babymouse series (JF HOL) by brother-sister team Jennifer and Matt Holm
  • Anya’s Ghost (YA GRAPHIC BRO) by Vera Brosgol
  • Boy Proof (YA CAS) by Cecil Castellucci. Beside her is Nate Powell, the artist on her new book, Year of the Beasts, coming out later this month.
  • Machine of Death: A Collection of Stories About People Who Know How They Will Die (F NOR) edited by Ryan North, Matthew Bernnardo and David Malki !
Greetings, all! I just got back to the Athenaeum today - I was up in Toronto last week, attending the Toronto Comic Arts Festival. Above you can see just a fraction of the exhibitors on the main floor of the Toronto Reference Library. I had a great time, met some of my comics heroes, and I got some neat stuff for the Ath!Look forward to more pictures from TCAF in the week ahead!
